Inspiration and awe quickly turned to shock and sadness as Americans watched the Space Shuttle Challenger break apart just 73 seconds after liftoff on January 28, 1986. All seven crew members, including teacher Christa McAuliffe, were killed. That night, President Ronald Reagan addressed the nation from the Oval Office, providing a touching tribute to the astronauts and much needed consolation to a mourning nation. Now, the United States Mint marks the 35th anniversary of the disaster with this Christa McAuliffe Silver Dollar Proof.

Obverse: Phebe Hemphill sculpted Laurie Musser's design. In it, McAuliffe bears a hopeful countenance. Inscriptions on this face include the featured astronaut's name, "CHRISTA MCAULIFFE," the date, "2021," the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and "LIBERTY."
Reverse: Emily Damstra designed and Joe Menna sculpted the reverse. McAuliffe points upward to the sky, representing the future, as three students are filled with wonder. The astronauts who died are represented by seven stars, and the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology is on the left. At the top of this face is the inscription "I TOUCH THE FUTURE. I TEACH." "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "ONE DOLLAR," and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" are inscribed elsewhere on the rim.
Nearly Perfect PR69 DCAM FS with Flag Label
The experts at Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) determined that this coin appears perfect to the naked eye, so they awarded it their second highest grade, Proof 69. They also credited the piece for having deeply mirrored fields by certifying it Deep Cameo. Finally, the company noted that it was submitted for grading within 30 days of its initial release from the mint by designating it First Strikes (FS). This information comes on a label that bears an American flag.
